The Future of Fireplaces: Our Introduction to Planika’s Water Vapor Technology

At Lancaster Interior Design, we are constantly exploring innovative products that blend luxury, beauty, performance, and practicality for the way people actually live. As one of the Suncoast’s longest-standing interior design firms, we believe exceptional design means staying ahead of what is possible – especially when it comes to creating atmosphere in a home.
Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a Zoom meeting with a representative from Planika Fireplaces, headquartered in Poland, to learn more about some of the most exciting fireplace technology we have seen in years. What immediately captured my attention was their water vapor fireplace technology, which creates the ambiance of fire without burning fuel.
A Fireplace Made From Water? Yes – Really.
At first glance, it almost seems impossible.
Planika’s Cool Flame fireplaces create a realistic flame effect using fine water vapor mist illuminated by LED lighting. The result is the visual experience of dancing flames without combustion or the smoke, soot, and ash that come with burning fuel.
For many homeowners, especially here on Florida’s Suncoast, this opens a new world of possibilities.

New Possibilities for Fireplace Placement
Imagine creating the ambiance and romance of a fireplace:
- In a condominium where traditional fireplace venting is impractical
- In a primary bedroom
- In a bathroom or covered lanai, where the selected model and installation requirements permit
- In a commercial or hospitality environment
- In a home where children, pets, or combustible materials make an open flame less appealing
Because the flame effect comes from illuminated mist, these systems do not require a chimney or combustion venting. They do need electricity and a water source, whether supplied through a refillable tank or a permanent connection on compatible models.
The right model and placement still need to be evaluated for each project, particularly in outdoor or moisture-prone areas.

Thoughtful Design for the Way We Live Today
At Lancaster Interior Design, sustainability and thoughtful design matter.
Many homeowners are looking for ways to reduce environmental impact without sacrificing luxury or ambiance. Water vapor fireplaces offer an alternative to burning wood or fuel, eliminating combustion-related smoke and soot during operation. They still use water and electricity, so their environmental impact depends on how they are powered and used.
Fireplace Ambiance for Florida Living
For Florida homes – where warmth is often less of a priority than atmosphere – this technology feels especially relevant.
A fireplace can bring visual interest, an architectural focal point, and a welcoming feeling to a room. A water vapor flame effect offers another way to create that experience without relying on a traditional burning fire.

A Company Built on Innovation
Planika’s story is also fascinating.
Founders Alfred Weilandt and Jerry Dąbrowski were inspired by the atmosphere of sitting around a campfire in Australia. They began imagining how to bring that experience into contemporary interiors while addressing challenges such as soot, ash, and chimney requirements.
That idea led to Planika’s early bioethanol products and an ongoing focus on fireplace technology and design. Beyond water vapor fireplaces, the company also offers bioethanol and gas fireplace systems.
